Anloga bee attack: Funeral for pupils set for Jan 14

The families of the two pupils who lost their lives following a bee attack at the Anloga Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Basic School have announced Wednesday, January 14, 2026, as the date for a joint funeral and burial service.

The deceased pupils have been identified as seven-year-old Theodora Amewovi and three-year-old Michael Kumeko, both in the kindergarten department of the school.

A joint funeral service will be held on the premises of the Anloga EP Basic School, starting at 1000 hours, after which the children will be laid to rest.

The funeral is expected to draw a large number of mourners, including sympathisers, education officials, political leaders and traditional authorities.

Dignitaries from the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters in Accra and the Volta Regional Education Directorate in Ho are expected to attend, alongside political heads from the Anloga District and beyond.

Among those expected at the funeral are the District Chief Executive, the Member of Parliament and other public officials who have expressed their readiness to share in the grief of the bereaved families.

In separate confirmations, the parents of the deceased pupils, Mr Edwin Yao Amewovi and Madam Augustine Mansah, parents of Theodora Amewovi, and Mr Emmanuel Kumeko and Madam Mawufemor Hiatefe, parents of Michael Kumeko, confirmed the funeral arrangements as they continue to mourn the painful loss of their children.

“This is a very difficult time for us as families, but we appreciate the support and solidarity we have received from the community and leadership,”

Confirming the funeral plans, Mr Thywill Deynu, Headteacher of Anloga E.P Basic School, told the Ghana News Agency that the school community remains united in grief and support.

“The school is still deeply affected by this tragedy. We will stand with the families on the funeral day and beyond,” Mr Deynu assured.

Traditional authorities have also pledged full participation. Togbi Zewu IV, Dufia of Anloga, said the traditional council is prepared to honour the pupils with dignity.

“The children were part of our community, and it is our responsibility to ensure they are given a respectful and befitting burial,” he noted.

Meanwhile, the bereaved families have continued to receive sympathy visits and support from several leaders and institutions, including the Regional and District Education Directorates, the Member of Parliament, the District Chief Executive, the Anlo Dukor Council, and other opinion leaders.

Checks by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) have revealed that a series of coordinated activities have been carried out on the school premises to eliminate the beehives and prevent future incidents.

The interventions, led by both traditional authorities and state agencies, combined spiritual measures, including prayers, with scientific methods like controlled spraying.

Personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ghana National Fire Service were actively involved in the exercise.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, when a swarm of bees invaded the Anloga EP Basic School in the Volta Region during instructional hours, triggering panic on the school premises.

A number of pupils and staff members sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment and later discharged. Two kindergarten pupils, namely Theodora Amewovi and Michael Kumeko, sadly lost their lives, plunging the Anloga community into deep mourning.

As preparations intensify towards the January 14, 2026, funeral, residents of Anloga and the wider Volta Region continue to express solidarity with the bereaved families
