MTN Ghana and MobileMoney Limited (MML) have presented GH¢200,000 cash and assorted items to Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu in support of this year’s Eidul Fitr.
The presentation, held at the residence of the Chief Imam at New Fadama in Accra on Wednesday, forms part of the companies’ annual gesture to the Muslim community during the festive period.
Eidul Fitr, to be celebrated on Friday, marks the end of Ramadan and is one of the most significant celebrations in Islam.
It begins with communal prayers and followed by visits to relatives, exchange of gifts, and the sharing of meals.
The celebration falls in the Islamic month of Shawwāl, immediately after Ramadan, and is a public holiday in Ghana.
Mr Ibrahim Misto, the Chief Digital Officer of MTN Ghana, presenting the items, said it was an honour to once again extend warm greetings to the Chief Imam and the Muslim community ahead of the Ramadan.
He said Ramadan was a sacred period devoted to prayer, reflection, sacrifice, and service to humanity, adding that Eidul Fitr reinforced values such as generosity, empathy, and togetherness, which aligned with MTN and MoMo’s guiding principles.
“As part of our support for the Eid celebrations, MTN Ghana and MoMo are presenting GH¢200,000 cash and food items to the Muslim community in Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale,” he said.
The items included 30 bags of rice, one ram, 20 cartons of vegetable oil, 40 packs of mineral water, 10 packs of canned drinks, 10 packs of Bel plastic drinks, 10 packs of assorted plastic drinks, 10 trays of tinned milk, 10 bags of sugar, five boxes of tea bags, and four boxes of sachet Milo.
Mr Misto noted that as part of activities to enhance the celebration, MTN and MoMo would deploy customer engagement stands at selected locations to resolve customer issues, register Mobile Money users, process transactions, and provide education on fraud prevention.
He said the gesture was to appreciate the Muslim Community for its continued loyalty and support, especially as MTN Ghana marked 30 years of service in the country.
Mr Misto commended the Chief Imam for his leadership and dedication to promoting peace, tolerance, and interfaith harmony in Ghana.
Sheikh Dr Sharubutu, receiving the items, expressed gratitude to the companies for their continuous support and prayed for Allah’s blessings upon their management and staff.
“Whoever is not grateful to human beings can never be grateful to God,” he said.
For 17 consecutive years, MTN Ghana has supported the Chief Imam during Eidul Fitr celebrations through donations and community engagements, particularly in Nima and Accra New Town, to promote peaceful coexistence.
The company also supports the National Hajj Board in organising the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.
Imams and elders of the Muslim Community later received the items.
