The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), following a courtesy call on the Acting Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo.

The GMA delegation, led by its General Secretary, Dr. Richard Selormey, congratulated Dr. Baidoo on his appointment, describing it as a proud and inspiring moment for the Association and the medical profession at large.

Dr. Baidoo, a former President of the GMA, was hailed as a capable leader whose elevation to the helm of Ghana’s second-largest tertiary health facility signals a positive development for the country’s healthcare system.

A key focus of the meeting was the urgent need to enhance cardiac emergency care at KATH. This follows the recent tragic death of a medical officer, reportedly due to the hospital’s lack of a cardiac catheterisation laboratory (Cath lab), sparking renewed concern about KATH’s capacity to manage complex cardiac emergencies.

Dr. Baidoo assured the GMA that management is taking proactive steps toward the establishment of a Cath lab. He revealed that the hospital is in advanced discussions with the Bank of Ghana to secure funding and technical support for the facility.

“Our engagement with the Bank of Ghana is progressing steadily, and we are hopeful that, with their support, the hospital will soon be equipped with a functional Cath lab,” he said.

Beyond the Cath lab initiative, the discussions also covered broader challenges affecting healthcare delivery at KATH and across the country. Topics included staff welfare, infrastructure development, and potential areas of future collaboration between the hospital and the GMA.

Dr. Selormey pledged the Association’s full support to the hospital’s leadership, emphasizing the GMA’s ongoing advocacy for improved resources, policies, and partnerships to boost patient care and enhance the wellbeing of healthcare professionals.
