Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening engagement with the Ghanaian diaspora to promote tourism beyond seasonal peaks.
She made the remarks during a courtesy call by members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, who are in Ghana to mark the organisation’s 118th Founder’s Day.
Madam Gomashie said that although the visit was arranged at short notice, she agreed to receive the delegation in recognition of the importance of relationship-building and sustained collaboration with diaspora groups.
She said that future engagements would be more formally scheduled to allow for broader participation by relevant stakeholders.
The Minister confirmed receipt of a brochure outlining proposed activities and indicated that the Ministry would review areas where her office and its agencies could be directly involved.
She explained that once the information had been assessed, appropriate agencies could be delegated to participate, including through institutional briefings, adding that follow-up engagements could be held at a later, mutually agreed time.
Mr Diallo Sumbry, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Adinkra Group, said the visit formed part of broader efforts by diaspora communities to support Ghana’s tourism, culture and creative arts agenda.
He disclosed that about 500 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority were currently in the country for the Founder’s Day celebrations, noting that diaspora networks had the capacity to mobilise significantly larger numbers.
Mr Sumbry highlighted that beyond December, there were several culturally significant periods throughout the year that motivated diaspora travel to Ghana, presenting opportunities for year-round tourism promotion.
He underscored the importance of cultural connection in sustaining diaspora interest and repeat visits and expressed optimism about strengthening collaboration and leveraging diaspora partnerships to position Ghana as a year-round destination for tourism and cultural engagement.
