Natives’ welcome amicable resolution of Sunyani chieftaincy dispute with joy

Indigenes of Sunyani, the Bono Regional capital say they welcomed the amicable resolution of a chieftaincy dispute between Odeefour Ogyeamansan  Korkor II and Nana Akosua Dua Asor Sika Brayie II, the Paramount Chief and Queen Mother of the Sunyani Traditional Area respectively with excitement.

They expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the intervention of the government, Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, as well as Mr Joseph Akwaboa, the Bono Regional Minister.

Nana Brayie and Odeefour Ogyemansan Korkor, had been engaged in a legal dispute over the rightful occupant of the Sunyani Paramount stool for barely a year now.

It followed the purported enstoolment of Odeefour Korkor II, following the death of the late paramount chief, Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri II in 2022 which rendered the stool vacant.

The dispute created division among the sub-chiefs and sub-queens of the traditional area, slowing down development efforts.

However, a meeting between the chieftaincy minister, the paramount queen mother, paramount chief, as well as some sub-chiefs, held Monday, February 02, 2026, led to the amicable resolution of the dispute.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Sunyani, Mr John Kusi, a native of the area noted that the resolution of the dispute had “relieved us because the dispute was causing fear and panic.”

“Now that there is peace there is also going to be progress in Sunyani,” he stated, worrying that chieftaincy disputes always derailed the development process.

Another native who spoke to the GNA on condition of anonymity, appealed to the kingmakers and royals to ensure that rightful candidates were enstooled whenever a traditional stool became rendered vacant.

Other residents said they were happy because resolution of the disputes would attract investments and push forward the progressive development of the Sunyani Municipality.
