TDC presents Oxygen City affordable housing concept to VRCC

The Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC), through its Spatial Planning Committee, has hosted a high-level stakeholder meeting to review the proposed Oxygen City affordable housing project for Ho.

The engagement, held on April 9, featured a detailed presentation by the Tema Development Company (TDC), led by its Managing Director, Mr Courage Nunekpeku.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including members of the Spatial Planning Committee, officials from the Environmental Protection Agency Ghana, development planning officers, and engineers, to deliberate on the feasibility and implementation of the project.

During the session, Mr Nunekpeku presented a comprehensive overview of the Oxygen City concept, an integrated and modern housing model aimed at addressing the growing demand for affordable housing in urban centres.

The presentation outlined the project’s design philosophy, land-use planning strategies, infrastructure considerations, and phased implementation framework.

The concept, according to the Managing Director, seeks to promote sustainable urban living through well-planned residential layouts, green spaces, and essential social amenities, while ensuring affordability for a broad segment of the population.

In his remarks, the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, underscored the importance of spatial planning in driving orderly and sustainable development within the decentralisation framework.

He noted that effective land-use planning was critical to preventing unregulated urban expansion and ensuring that infrastructure development aligns with population growth.

Mr Gunu assured TDC of the region’s full support and readiness to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to bring the project to fruition.

He further expressed optimism that the Oxygen City model, if successfully implemented in Ho, could be replicated across other district capitals in the Volta Region to help bridge the housing deficit.

The meeting also provided an interactive platform for participants to interrogate the proposed design, raise concerns, and offer technical inputs to strengthen the project’s implementation strategy.

Stakeholders discussed key issues such as environmental sustainability, infrastructure provision, regulatory compliance, and financing mechanisms, all aimed at ensuring the long-term success of the initiative.

The engagement forms part of ongoing efforts by the VRCC to explore innovative and practical solutions to the region’s housing challenges while promoting planned and inclusive urban development.
