Three held for alleged taxi theft activities

The Ghana Police Service has arrested three suspects alleged to be part of a syndicate using taxi cabs to steal mobile phones and other valuables.

The suspects, identified as Sasu Lawrence, also known as Agbe, Richard Osei, and Charles Kofi Nti, also known as Survivor, were arrested on January 12, 2026, following an intelligence-led operation.

A press release copied to the Ghana News Agency said preliminary investigations showed that the suspects mainly operated in the early hours, posing as taxi drivers to pick up passengers, with two seated in front and one at the back of the vehicle.

It said police investigations revealed that when a victim, mostly women, boarded the taxi, the suspects allegedly locked the doors deliberately to prevent the victim from alighting.

According to the release, while the victim attempted to open the door, the suspect seated at the back pretended to assist and allegedly stole the victim’s mobile phone or wallet.

The suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, while efforts are under way to identify and arrest persons who receive and trade in the stolen items.
