NDC’s Baba Jamal wins Ayawaso East bye-election

Alhaji Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has won the Ayawaso East parliamentary bye-election, retaining the seat for the party.

Official results released by the Electoral Commission indicated that Baba Jamal secured 10,884 votes.

Baba Ali Yussif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) obtained 4,009 votes, while Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) polled 43 votes.

Two independent candidates, Umar Sanda Mohammed and David Akonor, garnered 1,885 and 107 votes respectively.

Out of 17,048 ballots cast, 16,928 were valid, with 120 rejected ballots.

The constituency has 49,966 registered voters.

The bye-election was conducted to fill the vacancy created by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama, in January 2026.

The exercise was generally peaceful, with no major incidents reported at the close of polls.

Security personnel were deployed early to polling centres across Nima, Maamobi, Accra New Town and adjoining communities to maintain law and order.

Police officers were stationed at strategic points, while patrol teams monitored activities within the electoral areas throughout the day.

Supporters of Baba Jamal gathered at the forecourt of the collation centre to celebrate ahead of the official declaration by the Electoral Commission.

In an interview with journalists after the declaration, Baba Jamal dedicated the victory to his mother and expressed gratitude to the NDC and constituents for their support and “finding me worthy.”

He pledged to “reset the whole constituency” and bring development to Ayawaso East.

“The resetting of Ayawaso East starts now,” he said.

Earlier, speaking ahead of the official declaration, Baba Ali Yussif congratulated Baba Jamal but said the low turnout showed that the people “have lost confidence in the NDC” and suggested that the NPP could win the seat in future.

“The people have spoken and we’ll take it in good faith,” he said.

Baba Jamal was born on May 7, 1969, at Akwatia in the Eastern Region.

He is a lawyer and a leading member of the NDC.

Baba Jamal studied at the University of Ghana and was called to the Ghana Bar in 2015.

He previously served as Member of Parliament for Akwatia from January 2013 to January 2017 and was appointed a Deputy Minister during the first term of President John Dramani Mahama.

Baba Jamal was appointed Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria in 2025 but was later recalled by President Mahama over allegations of voter inducement during the party’s constituency primaries-claims that were subsequently found to be unfounded.

The victory marks his return to Parliament after nine years and extends the NDC’s hold on the constituency since 1992.
