Tongor-Dzemeni community marks 69th Independence Day with massive clean-up exercise

Residents of Tongor-Dzemeni in the South Dayi District of the Volta Region turned out in large numbers on Friday, March 6, 2026, to undertake a massive clean-up exercise in commemoration of Ghana’s 69th Independence Day.

The exercise, which began at 6:00 a.m., saw community members, local youth groups, and market traders join forces to rid the lakeside community of filth.

Participants focused on desilting choked drains, sweeping principal streets, and clearing weeds around the Dzemeni Market and landing beach areas.

The activity was part of a broader patriotic call for nationwide clean-up initiatives to mark the anniversary, reflecting a shift toward community service and environmental responsibility as a way to celebrate national freedom.

Hundreds of residents, including traditional leaders and unit committee members, actively participated, showcasing a strong spirit of communal labor.

Mr Courage Kokroko, District Chief Executive (DCE) of South Dayi, told the Ghana News Agency that the Assembly is responsible for ensuring every community in the district is kept clean to promote good health.

He noted that Dzemeni Market, one of the largest in the region, attracts people from across the country, and because marketplaces have tenancy sanitation concerns, district leaders decided to undertake the exercise to maintain cleanliness.

The DCE emphasised that cleanliness is a form of patriotism and urged residents to make sanitation a daily responsibility rather than a one-time event, aligning with the district’s goal of becoming one of the cleanest in the country.

The clean-up served as a prelude to other low-key Independence Day activities in the district, demonstrating the community’s commitment to national development through local action.
