Some traders in the Dormaa Municipality of the Bono Region have appealed to President John Dramani Mahama, to investigate the destruction of thousands of crates of eggs worth over GHC10 million they exported to Burkina Faso.
Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, the Paramount Chief of the Dormaa Traditional Area, made the appeal on behalf of the traders when President Mahama visited the area, as part of his two-day “Reset Ghana Tour” to the Bono Region.
Accompanied by some ministers of state, Members of Parliament (MPs), national executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and government officials, the President was at Dormaa-Ahenkro to perform the groundbreaking ceremony for work to commence on the construction of a model 24hour market at the Dormaa Tuesday Market.
Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Badu told the President that the Dormaa traders exported the eggs through Paga, the capital of the Kassena Nankana West District of the Upper East Region to Burkina Faso.
He added that when the traders entered that country, some officials there seized and destroyed the crates of eggs for reasons only known to them.
Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Badu, who is also the President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, said since the incident happened the poultry business in the Dormaa Municipality had been badly affected.
“Dormaa-Ahenkro is a hub of poultry business. The poultry sector is the main socio-economic livelihood of my people, and we largely depend on it for our survival,” the Paramount chief stated.
“My people have been trading with the Burkinabes, and we are yet to know why they seized and destroyed the eggs. So, as you have come here, please try and investigate the incident for us,” the Paramount Chief pleaded.
He called on the government to probe the incident and ascertain the circumstances that led to the destruction of the eggs, and to fetch justice for the affected traders.
