In a landmark ceremony celebrating dedicated leadership and unwavering support for sports development, the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has officially conferred the prestigious title of Chief Patron on the Volta Regional Minister, Mr James Gunu.
The honour by the association, recognizes Mr Gunu’s “relentless commitment to the promotion of sports” and his instrumental role in elevating the profile of sporting activities within the Volta Region and across the nation.
During a breakfast meeting with the leaders of SWAG and the Volta Regional Chapter of the Association in Ho, the President of SWAG, Mr. Kwabena Yeboah, lauded the Minister for his open-door policy and his consistent efforts to bridge the gap between administrative governance and the sporting fraternity.
The meeting held at the residence of the minister, formed part of activities to mark the eighth anniversary celebration of the Volta Regional Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana.
“This title is not merely ceremonial,” Mr. Yeboah remarked. “It is to honour a leader who understands that sports is not just a game, but a tool for youth empowerment, regional branding, and social cohesion. Mr Gunu has proven himself a true ally of the sports media and the athletes themselves.”
In his relatively young stay in office, the Volta Region has seen a significant uptick in sports infrastructure advocacy and initiating the annual minister’s cup.
His support has been pivotal for strengthening the synergy between the Regional Coordinating Council and local sports journalists as well as advocating for the completion of the Ho Sports Stadium and other multi-purpose facilities.
Accepting the title, Mr James Gunu expressed profound gratitude to the leadership of SWAG. He dedicated the honour to the people of the Volta Region, reaffirming his commitment to making the region a “sports tourism hub” in Ghana.
“I am deeply humbled by this recognition,” the Minister stated. “Sports has the power to unite us like nothing else. I accept this Life Patron title with a renewed sense of responsibility to ensure that our youth have the platforms and the visibility they need to excel on the global stage.”
He urged the Sports Media to propagate the works of athletes and officials in the region and assured them of his continuous support in making the region attractive for sports investment.
