Elder Simon Ampaabeng Kyeremeh, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Berekum East in the Bono Region has called on the security to stem illegal mining activities in the constituency and the Berekum West District.
He said checks revealed that no company had been granted the license to mine at Amomaso and called for support from the community members to stem illegal mining activities in the area and protect the environment.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview at Berekum, Elder Kyeremeh said stemming illegal mining required a collective approach, and called on stakeholders to support the security services.
He expressed concern that illegal mining contributed to water scarcity, health problems and environmental harm and destruction of natural resources.
The MP’s concern followed tension which erupted at Amomaso when a mining company attempted to undertake community mining in the area.
However, some concerned residents resisted, questioning the company’s license and documentation to operate in the area.
