Students from eight schools in three regions have identified road safety hazards around their schools under the VIA Safe Mobility for All Young People Programme.

The student ambassadors assessed their school environments during a “Discovery Walk”, identifying risks affecting learners travelling to and from school and proposing practical measures to improve safety.

The programme, an initiative of the TotalEnergies Foundation, is being implemented in Ghana by Oli Best Road Safety Organisation, with support from TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana PLC.

The exercise formed part of efforts to equip students with practical road safety knowledge and leadership skills and encourage them to advocate safer mobility in their schools and communities.

The ambassadors identified unsafe school surroundings, dangerous driver behaviour, inadequate road infrastructure and road signs, and poorly organised traffic and pedestrian environments.

The findings identified location-specific risks at each participating school and would inform school action plans and awareness campaigns aimed at improving road safety within their communities.

The programme will culminate in a final event in November 2026, where participating schools will present proposals on practical solutions to the challenges identified during the “Discovery Walk”.

The VIA Safe Mobility for All Young People Programme is a global initiative of the TotalEnergies Foundation aimed at reducing road traffic injuries and fatalities among young people.

Since its launch in 2019, the programme has reached more than 2,000 schools in 45 countries, empowering students to serve as road safety ambassadors through practical, context-based education.

The eight participating schools in Ghana are Nana Kwaku Boateng M/A Basic “A” School in Koforidua; Church of Christ Senior High School, Prempeh College, Kumasi Academy Senior High School, Amakom SDA JHS and KNUST Senior High School in Kumasi; and Sacred Heart Senior High School and Sunyani Senior High School in Sunyani.

The Ghana edition was launched in May 2026 with participation from stakeholders in the education, emergency response and road safety sectors.
