MTN Ghana has announced plans to invest US$1.1 billion over three years, including approximately US$380 million in 2026, to improve network capacity, service quality and infrastructure resilience across the country.
The investment forms part of the telecommunications company’s commitment to strengthening connectivity, expanding digital access and supporting Ghana’s economic and social development.
Mr David Gyimah Boadi, General Manager for Southern Ghana, MTN Ghana, announced this during a Regional Media and Stakeholder Engagement Programme in the Volta Region, attended by representatives of state institutions and media practitioners.
The engagement, held as part of activities marking MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary, featured a documentary screening highlighting the company’s contribution to connecting communities and supporting socio-economic development over the past three decades.
Mr Boadi said MTN Ghana was also deploying 500 new network sites nationwide in 2026, with the Volta region expected to benefit from the expansion.
He said the company remained committed to improving network performance, promoting school connectivity, educating customers, and supporting community-based interventions to ensure more people benefited from the digital economy.
According to him, connectivity must go beyond the provision of network signals to support livelihoods, education, businesses, and access to essential services.
Mr Boadi said MTN Ghana was intensifying efforts to promote digital and financial inclusion, support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and equip young people with skills for participation in the digital economy.
He cited initiatives such as the One Million Coders Programme, MTN Skills Academy and Girls-in-ICT as interventions designed to build digital competencies among young people.
He said the Girls-in-ICT Programme was organised in the Volta region in 2025 in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications, training 1,000 girls and 100 teachers in basic information and communications technology, digital literacy and work-readiness skills.
On health and education, Mr Boadi said the MTN Ghana Foundation, in March 2026, commissioned and handed over an ultra-modern Accident and Emergency Centre valued at GH¢15.4 million to the Ho Teaching Hospital.
He added that the Foundation had supported 230 students in the Volta region through its Bright Scholarship Scheme, while the national programme awarded 500 scholarships in 2026, covering tuition, accommodation, stipends and laptops.
Mr Boadi also highlighted the growing contribution of Mobile Money (MoMo) to financial inclusion, saying transaction value increased by 44.4 per cent year-on-year in the first half of 2026, while active users grew by 3.1 per cent.
He said transaction volumes and MoMo revenue each increased by 23.3 per cent over the same period.
Mr Boadi, however, cautioned customers to safeguard their personal information, PINs and passwords, stressing that cybersecurity and the prevention of digital fraud required collective responsibility.
Providing an overview of the company’s financial performance, he said MTN Ghana’s service revenue grew by 32.3 per cent to GH¢15.0 billion in the first half of 2026, while earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) increased by 47.1 per cent to GH¢9.3 billion.
Profit after tax rose by 46.8 per cent to GH¢5.1 billion, while the company paid GH¢5.6 billion in direct and indirect taxes and GH¢384.7 million in fees and levies during the period.
Mr Boadi said the company’s strong financial performance enabled it to continue investing in telecommunications infrastructure, supporting local businesses, creating jobs and funding social intervention programmes.
He acknowledged persistent challenges, including affordability, access to connectivity, digital literacy and skills gaps, and called for stronger collaboration among government, regulators, educational institutions, businesses, development partners and communities to address them.
As MTN Ghana celebrates 30 years of operations, he reaffirmed the company’s commitment to improving network quality, expanding digital opportunities, protecting customer trust and investing in interventions that benefit communities.
Mr Boadi also expressed appreciation to the media for supporting public engagement and accountability, as well as to government, regulators, customers and communities for their contributions to the growth of the telecommunications sector.
The programme featured a panel discussion involving officials responsible for sales and distribution, network operations, customer experience and Momo services, who engaged participants on network quality, customer relations, digital inclusion and innovations within the telecommunications sector.
Some stakeholders, including representatives of regulatory institutions and the media, commended MTN Ghana’s investments in digital infrastructure, education, health and financial inclusion, and encouraged the company to sustain efforts to improve service delivery and expand connectivity to underserved communities.
