GFA moves to secure safety of Black Queens in UAE, urges calm

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has moved swiftly to ensure the safety of the Black Queens and assess their participation in the Pink Ladies Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Recent tensions in the Middle East have brought many activities in the region to a standstill including Ghana’s Black Queens participation in this year’s Pink Ladies Cup.

Following their 4-0 win over Hong Kong, China, at the Al-Hamriyah Sports Stadium, the Black Queens were set to play Russia and Tanzania in their next fixtures.

According to a statement made by the local football governing body, Mr Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, the GFA President, met with the Black Queens to urge for calm.

“He assured the team that the GFA has, over the last 24 to 48 hours, engaged with all stakeholders, including Ghana’s mission in the United Arab Emirates, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and our Security Advisors, in its quest to find the right solution to the problem,” the statement said.

It added that Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams had reached out to the team to express the government’s support during the tense period.

“The GFA respectfully asks everyone to remain calm as we monitor the situation,” the association said, noting that stakeholders would be updated as developments unfold.

The Black Queens have been in the UAE for a week as part of their preparations for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where they aim to build on last year’s performance that earned them a bronze medal.
