President Mahama commends GWL MD for expanding access to safe water

President John Dramani Mahama has commended Mr Adam Mutawakilu, the Managing Director of Ghana Water Ltd, for his efforts in improving access to safe water across the country.

He said access to safe water remained a fundamental right and not a privilege, stressing the need for sustained investment and institutional commitment to the sector.

Speaking at the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Gonjaland Youth Association in Buipe at the weekend, President Mahama praised Mr Mutawakilu for his dedication and impact in the water sector.

“With regard to safe water, we know it is a right and not a privilege. I want to thank my younger brother, Adam Mutawakilu, for the work he has done. We did not send him to Ghana Water Company for nothing. He has done all the leg work,” the President said.

The commendation reflects government’s focus on strengthening water delivery systems and ensuring equitable access to safe drinking water, particularly in underserved communities.

Touching on ongoing infrastructure expansion, President Mahama disclosed that all preparatory work for the Damango Water Supply System had been completed.

The Project, with funding support from the European Union, would draw raw water from the White Volta at Yapei and transport it to Damango, where it would be treated and distributed to residents.

The system is expected to significantly improve potable water access for an estimated 8,000 people in Damongo and surrounding communities, many of whom currently face challenges in accessing reliable water supply.

President Mahama announced that the Minister of Finance had signed the commitment letter for the project to commence, describing it as a major step towards addressing water needs in the Savannah Region.

“I am happy to announce that just last week, the Minister of Finance signed the commitment letter for the Damango Water Supply System to start. Galus, well done,” he added.
