Hohoe Environmental Health and Sanitation Department destroys unwholesome products

The Hohoe Municipal Environmental Health and Sanitation Department has destroyed expired food products seized from sellers in the Municipality.

The products include tins of tomato sauce, crates of assorted soft and alcoholic drinks, paper drinks, sachets of spices, and margarine.

Mr Divine Abotsi, Hohoe Municipal Environmental Health Analyst, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the Department undertook store inspections and retrieved expired products after which court approval was sought before the destruction.

He said unwholesome products could not only be because of the expiry dates, but ways such products were handled could make them unsafe for consumption.

Mr Abotsi noted that food or products in cans such as creams could become unsafe when they get dented or ‘bloated’.

He said the Department continued to educate sellers and buyers on the need to check expiry dates and good shape of products.

Mr Abotsi said some sellers deliberately rubbed off expiry dates on products, adding that during inspections, same products in a pack had different expiry dates.

He said most retailers also perceive the work of the Department as a target against their businesses, which was not the case.
