We did not alter or vary travel schedule of 4×100 relay team – Sports Ministry

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation says it did not alter or vary the travel schedule of Ghana’s 4×100 relay team ahead of the World Athletics Relays 2026.

Following their qualification to the 2027 World Athletics Championships, some members of the quartet including Benjamin Azamati and Saminu Abdul Rasheed voiced frustration over travel plans arranged by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

The Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) has since issued a statement accepting responsibility for the challenges encountered by the athletes and promised improved arrangements in future engagements.

In a statement, Mr Bagbara Tanko, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, said arrival timelines and competition preparations are determined by the federations, and not the Ministry.

“The role of the Ministry, upon receipt of recommendations from the National Sports Authority and the relevant federation, is to facilitate the procurement of travel arrangement in line with the approved schedule.

“With specific reference to the World Athletics Relays, the Ministry did not vary or alter the travel schedule as submitted by the Ghana Athletics Association,” the statement said.

The Ministry added that it remains committed to supporting all national teams within established procedures and would continue to work closely with the National Sports Authority and federations to ensure optimal preparation for athletes.

The statement also commended the team for qualifying for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing and wished them continued success.
