GRIDCo Board holds historic staff durbar

The Board of Directors of Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has held its first-ever direct engagement with staff in a durbar bringing together employees from across the company’s operational areas.

The event created a platform for open dialogue between the Board, Management, and staff, while also recognising engineers and technicians whose efforts restored full operations at the Akosombo Generating Station following the April 23, 2026, fire incident.

A statement issued in Accra by the Company and copied to the Ghana News Agency said the durbar was attended by the full board, including Madam Kuukua Maurice Ankrah- Board Chair, Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, Paramount Chief and President of the Akwamu Traditional Council and Nana Amoasi VII, Chief of Ekumfi Abor;

Others are Mr Solomon Kuyon, Member of Parliament for Krachi Nchumuru; Mr Joseph Kwame Kumah, Member of Parliament for Kintampo North; Engineer Daniel Atchulo; and Alhaji Muhammed Bashiru Nii Narh Alema.

Also present was Mr Frank Otchere, Acting Chief Executive of GRIDCo, and members of the senior management team.

The occasion marked the first time in GRIDCo’s history that the Board had convened a company-wide direct engagement with staff, reflecting what officials described as a commitment to transparency, open communication, and stronger institutional cohesion.

Madam Ankrah reaffirmed the board’s support for management and staff.

She highlighted the significance of the engagement and stressed the need for collaboration and dedication as the company pursued its operational and infrastructure goals.

Madam Ankrah said the company’s response to the Akosombo incident demonstrated the technical competence and resilience of its workforce.

She said the cooperation between both institutions was exemplary and reflected the kind of unity required within Ghana’s energy sector.

“It was beautiful to see the collaboration between the VRA staff and the GRIDCo staff; you could not tell who VRA was and who was GRIDCo. That is the kind of unity that we want to see,” she said.

Mr Frank Otchere, Acting Chief Executive of GRIDCo, praised the dedication and professionalism displayed by staff throughout the crisis.

He described the Board Chair as “Deborah,” drawing parallels with the biblical figure who led her people to victory.

“When adversities happen and we have men and women who are able to rise to the occasion, it takes away all the negativities and reminds us of the abilities and strengths that we have,” he said.

He urged staff to maintain the same spirit of commitment and teamwork in all aspects of the company’s operations.

The Board also commended the strong collaboration between GRIDCo and Volta River Authority (VRA) personnel during the restoration exercise.

The restoration effort also received national recognition, with President John Dramani Mahama visiting the Akosombo facility on the day full power generation was restored and commending the teams for their efforts.

The Board used the occasion to signal GRIDCo’s commitment to infrastructure modernisation, announcing plans to replace the destroyed switchyard control room with a modern state-of-the-art facility.

The Board formally commended staff for their response to the April 23, 2026 fire, which damaged the switchyard control room at Akosombo and temporarily isolated the 1,020-megawatt Akosombo Generating Station from the national grid.

GRIDCo engineers executed a technical bypass of the destroyed control infrastructure, reconfigured protection settings, and restored the generating units sequentially over subsequent days.
