Police arrest suspect over murder of UCC student

The Ghana Police Service has arrested Michael Mensah, a 39-year-old suspect, for the murder of University of Cape Coast student, Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.

The suspect was arrested by the IGP’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team on  June 15, 2026 at about 1915 hours at the Pedu Lorry Station, Cape-Coast, following sustained intelligence-led operations, the Police Social media handle has said.

It said preliminary investigation had revealed that on June 11, 2026, at about 1848 hours, the suspect who claimed to be a teacher by profession but also worked as a driver, picked the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the UCC hostel enclave and took her to the Hatchland Beach Resort, (also referred to as Hutchland Beach), where she was last seen.

“Investigations continue and any further development will be duly communicated,” it added.

The family of Innocentia, a 20-year-old level 200 student, reported her as missing and urged the public for assistance.

She was last seen at Ayensu Plaza Hostel on the UCC campus on June 11, 2026.

On June 12, her body was later discovered at Hatchland Beach Resort, near the university in the Central Region.
