Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ketu South, has toured several flood-affected communities in the municipality to assess the extent of destruction caused by recent heavy rains.
The tour, which covered communities including Ziorme, Gakli, Duta, Agbawoeme and its environs, forms part of efforts by the MP to engage affected residents and coordinate relief interventions.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Madam Gomashie described the situation as distressing, noting that recurring flooding linked to tidal waves, excessive rainfall, and spillovers from the Keta Basin continued to impact livelihoods.
“What I have seen is quite worrying. We have waterlogged communities, and in some cases, people have been displaced due to the floods,” she said.
She commended residents in Gakli for initiating a self-help response by using water pumps to drain flooded areas, describing the effort as a demonstration of resilience and community spirit.
“I was impressed that they did not wait for government support but took the initiative to manage the situation themselves,” she added.
The MP said arrangements were underway to distribute relief items, including food supplies, to affected households in collaboration with relevant agencies.
She noted that beyond immediate relief, the flooding had disrupted economic activities, particularly for residents whose sources of livelihood had been affected.
Madam Gomashie expressed concern over the recurring nature of the floods over the past five years and called for sustained efforts to address both natural and human-induced causes.
She used the opportunity to visit and commiserate with a family affected by a related flood incident in Alogboshie in the Greater Accra Region, where four lives were lost, and assured them of continued support.
“What happened in Alogboshie has affected residents of Aflao. Eight lives were lost, four of whom are from Ketu South, and I have visited the family to commiserate with them,” she said.
She emphasised the need for long-term interventions to mitigate the impact of climate change and protect vulnerable communities.
