The Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN) Ghana has donated GH¢20,000, airtime worth GH¢1,000, assorted drinks and water to the Wala Traditional Council to support the celebration of the 2026 Dumba Festival.

The donation formed part of the MTN Ghana’s support towards promoting the cultural heritage of the Ghanaian people, unity and local economic development.

Presenting the items in Wa on Friday, Mr Richard Asamane, the MTN Ghana’s Area Sales Manager, North, said the company’s support reflected its belief in Africa and its commitment to Ghana’s cultural heritage.

He said the Dumba Festival was an important expression of the Wala people’s history, culture and identity, which brought together the people of the traditional area to strengthen community bonds and showcase the Wala culture.

He indicated that traditional festivals, such as Dumba, played an important role in preserving history, promoting unity and creating opportunities for tourism, economic activity and community development.

Mr Asamane said the values associated with Dumba resonated with MTN Ghana’s commitment to supporting communities beyond providing telecommunications and digital services.

He explained: “As MTN Ghana marks 30 years of service, we recognise that our journey has been made possible by the trust and loyalty of communities such as Wa.

“For three decades, you have trusted us to connect you to family, business, opportunity and the world. We do not take that trust for granted.”

Mr Asamane observed that the MTN Ghana would also establish experience centres at key locations during the festival to provide support services to its customers and ensure a seamless experience during the festivity.

He prayed for a peaceful, joyous and successful festival, and expressed the hope that the celebration would bring renewed hope, unity and prosperity to the people of the area.

“As you celebrate Dumba, may it remain a source of unity, pride and inspiration, preserving the Wala tradition for generations to come,” Mr Asamane said.

Receiving the items, Dr Issahaque Mumuni, the Secretary to the Dumba Planning Committee, expressed appreciation to the MTN Ghana for the support, and said it would help reduce the committee’s financial burden in organising the festival.

He said: “Every token helps a lot. And with this, we are even running out of assorted drinks like this. But once this has come in, our burden and the pressure have reduced.

Even Wa Naa, hearing of this, is also relieved, because this alone can cater for the numerous people who are coming in from the various towns and villages. So, we are really grateful for the support.”

The 2026 Dumba Festival, which comes to a climax on Sunday, August 30, 2026, brings together traditional authorities, residents, visitors and other stakeholders across the region and beyond to celebrate the culture and tradition of the Wala people.
