The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has appointed Ghana Rugby President Rafatu Inusah as Chef de Mission for Team Ghana at the 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games in Malta and Gozo.
The Commonwealth Youth Games would be held from October 29 to November 4, 2027, bringing together about 1,200 athletes aged between 14 and 18 from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories.
Rafatu’s appointment places her in charge of leading and coordinating Ghana’s delegation as the country prepares for the multi-sport event, which serves as a stepping stone for young athletes aspiring to compete at senior international level.
As a member of the GOC board, Rafatu serves on the committee’s Games and Technical Committee and the Women’s Commission.
She is also the first woman to lead the Ghana Rugby Football Union and previously served as Secretary-General of the Ghana Triathlon Federation.
In a statement, the GOC said the appointment reflected Inusah’s contribution to sports administration, athlete development and grassroots sport in Ghana.
In a related development, Madam Rafatu has been selected by the GOC to participate in the International Coaching Enrichment Certificate Program (ICECP) in the United States.
The programme is organised by the University of Delaware in partnership with Olympic Solidarity and the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC), and is designed to provide advanced training in coaching, athlete development and sports management for sports professionals from around the world.
The training is expected to expose her to international best practices and strengthen her expertise in sports development and administration, further supporting her role within Ghana’s sporting landscape and the Olympic movement.
Mr Richard Akpokavie, the GOC President, described the appointment as commitment to promoting women into leadership positions in sport.
“The choice of Rafatu Inusah is strategic for the GOC as it deliberately focuses on women empowerment, actively placing capable female leaders at the highest echelons of national sports governance to drive lasting transformation,” Mr Akpokavie said.
