The worlds of artificial intelligence (AI) and strategic cognitive development converged as Pi Chess have successfully hosted the inaugural AI and Chess Festival at the Accra AI Community Centre.
The 12-hour event, spearheaded by Madam Gertrude Banini, Chief Executive Officer of Pi Chess, was made possible through exclusive financial sponsorship and venue support from Google.

Madam Gertrude Banini, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the festival used the ancient game of chess as a practical framework to demystify artificial intelligence for the public which also focused on algorithmic thinking, distributed processing, and rapid pattern recognition.
“Chess is far more than just a board game, it is the foundational blueprint for how machines learn and process complex information,” she said.
She added that partnering with Google created a unique environment where young minds, tech professionals, and chess masters physically interacted with the logic that underpins the future of technology.
She said the festival drew an impressive 123 attendees and featured 80 active competitors across three distinct tiers, including a FIDE-standard Junior Tournament for youth empowerment.
“An afternoon Beginners Tournament and a high-stakes Masters Rapid session also formed part of the competition which catered for players at different skill levels.”
Madam Banini stressed that the activities have highlighted Pi Chess’s commitment to inclusive tech education which achieved a milestone with 39 per cent female attendance and broke traditional gender barriers in both the tech and chess communities.
She indicated that the corporate-community synergy was further demonstrated when Google staff members stepped away from their desks to join a rapid, ‘Crash Course’ and compete in their first Beginners Tournament.
She said beyond competitive play, participants engaged in interactive tech activities such as the ‘Puzzle Storm Challenge’ to test cognitive agility and ‘Hand and Brain’ variants to simulate distributed neural networks.

Madam Banini stated that a life-sized Giant Chess installation and an interactive ‘Human verses Machine’ demo station allowed players of all levels to test their logic directly against AI algorithms throughout the day.
The success of the AI and Chess Festival has positioned the Accra AI Community Centre as a vibrant hub for innovation and set a new benchmark for corporate partnerships in the country, with Pi Chess pledging to continue bridging youth development and the tech sector under Banini’s leadership.
