Sylvester Amakye, Assin North District Chief Executive (DCE) cautioned the public to stop discriminating against Persons with Disability (PWDs), stressing that they deserved respect, equal opportunities, and support to thrive in society.
According to him, supporting PWDs was crucial to building inclusive and progressive society where individuals could contribute meaningfully to development.
The DCE gave the caution when he distributed essential items to more than 58 persons with disabilities at Assin Akropong as part of efforts of the Assin North District Assembly to empower them economically and socially.
Items distributed included deep freezers with ice chests, fufu pounding machines, cocoa spraying machines, fertilizers, hair dryers, and other working tools aimed at helping beneficiaries start or expand their businesses.
Mr Amakye noted that when person’s with disabilities were ostracised, they would not be able to maximise their potentials to make society a better place.
He emphasised that it was the responsibility of the society to accept them with welcoming hands for them to feel loved.
On his part, the Assin North District Director of Social Welfare, Mr Emmanuel Dadzie highlighted government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities through various social intervention programmes.
The beneficiaries who received the items expressed gratitude to the District Assembly and the government for the support, describing the intervention as timely and life changing.
