TUC, Volta Minister deepen collaboration ahead of May Day celebrations

The leadership of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the Volta Region has paid a courtesy call on the Volta Regional Minister to brief him on preparations for this year’s May Day celebrations and to discuss key development concerns affecting workers.

The delegation, led by Mrs Edith Amenuvor Afewu, Regional Secretary of the TUC, said the annual May Day event would be held in Ho and is expected to attract workers from across both the Volta and Oti Regions.

She explained that the celebration would not only commemorate workers’ contributions to national development but also serve as a platform to honour outstanding individuals and institutions whose dedication and performance have significantly impacted productivity.

“The awards component is meant to motivate workers to give off their best and to encourage excellence across various sectors,” she said.

Mrs Afewu also used the opportunity to engage the Minister on the broader development agenda of the region, highlighting issues affecting workers, including infrastructure gaps and the need for improved working conditions.

Mr James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister, expressed appreciation to the TUC leadership for the visit and commended organised labour for its consistent advocacy and role in national development.

He assured the delegation that the Volta Region remained peaceful and conducive for socio-economic activities, adding that the government continued to roll out interventions aimed at improving the lives of residents.

Mr Gunu outlined ongoing efforts in key sectors, including road infrastructure, water supply, education, healthcare, and economic empowerment, noting that these initiatives were critical to enhancing livelihoods and supporting worker productivity.

He acknowledged concerns about stalled development projects in parts of the region and indicated that the government was working with relevant stakeholders to address bottlenecks and ensure their completion.

The Minister further called on organised labour to support ongoing sanitation campaigns, stressing that environmental cleanliness required collective responsibility and active citizen participation.

“Development is a shared responsibility, and we must all play our part, especially in maintaining a clean and healthy environment,” he stated.

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration to promote regional development, improve working conditions, and enhance the welfare of workers.

The meeting ended on a note of mutual cooperation, with assurances of continued engagement between the Regional Coordinating Council and organised labour ahead of the May Day celebrations.
