ComCA Ghana, ILO mark World Day Against Child Labour at Boinzan

ComCA Ghana, a non-governmental organisation in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation, has commemorated the 2026 World Day Against Child Labour at Boinzan in the Juaboso District of the Western North Region.

The event, held under the theme: “Red Card to Child Labour, Fair Play for Children, Decent Work for Adults,” brought together traditional authorities, school children, and officials from the National Commission for Civic Education to deliberate on ending child labour, particularly in mining communities.

Mr Divine Todzo, Finance and Administrative Manager of ComCA Ghana, said the organisation had distributed educational materials to over 140 pupils in Juaboso and Bia East districts, and established 22 Village Savings and Loans schemes for farmer cooperatives.

He told the GNA that the interventions were yielding results, as pupils no longer stayed home due to lack of learning materials, while parents were accessing loans to expand livelihoods instead of sending their children to illegal mining sites, popularly known as galamsey.

Mr Bismarck Quartey, National Coordinator of the Accelerating the Elimination of Child Labour in Cocoa and Artisanal Mining Value Chains programme at ILO, said the organisation was advocating for children to have “fair play” and for adults to secure decent work to support their families.

“While the law does not completely ban children from working, children should not work for more than four hours a day, and the work must not affect their health or education,” he said.

He stressed that galamsey sites were hazardous and children under 18 were prohibited from entering such sites, let alone engaging in mining activities.
