The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced that efforts have been intensified to restore power following an explosion and fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company’s (GRIDCo) Akosombo Substation, which has affected about 1,000 megawatts of electricity supply.
Mr John Abdulai Jinapor, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, addressing the media after inspecting the site on Friday, said engineers were working around the clock to restore supply through alternative arrangements.
Mr Jinapor explained that the immediate strategy involved isolating the affected control system and rerouting power through other operational units to stabilise the grid.

According to him, technical teams from GRIDCo and the Volta River Authority (VRA) were already on the ground, working in shifts to ensure continuous progress.
He said the engineers were targeting the restoration of at least one unit by the end of the day, noting that the move would serve as a critical step toward bringing the remaining units back on stream.
“Once the first unit is successfully restored, it will pave the way for the restoration of the other units,” he said.
The Minister stressed that restoring power remained the immediate priority, while investigations into the cause of the incident continued.
He assured the public that all necessary measures were being taken to stabilise the system and return power supply to normal as soon as possible.
The explosion, which led to a fire outbreak, caused extensive damage to parts of the facility, although the switchyard remained intact due to built-in safety design.
