The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) will undertake emergency works to replace a damaged transmission tower on the 161kV Tema–Achimota transmission line at Ashaiman on Sunday, August 16, 2026.
The company said the works would require an interruption in power supply to some locations in the Greater Accra Region from 3:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to enable its engineers and technical teams to safely replace the damaged tower and restore the integrity of the transmission line.
According to the GRIDCo, the transmission tower was damaged when a fuel tanker exploded while welding work was being carried out on its tank within the transmission line right-of-way (RoW).
In a press statement issued on Saturday, August 15, the GRIDCo said the emergency works were necessary to ensure the safety of personnel and the public and to restore the affected transmission infrastructure.
The company apologised to affected customers for the inconvenience the planned outage might cause and appealed for their patience and cooperation while the works were being undertaken.
The GRIDCo reiterated also its warning against encroachment on lawfully acquired or assigned transmission line rights-of-way, saying such occupation was prohibited by law.
It mentioned the Transmission Line Protection Regulations, 1967 (L.I. 542), updated by L.I. 1737 of 2004, which ban certain activities in transmission line areas, such as building without permission; digging; drilling; running businesses; parking trucks; setting up shops and garages; and any other actions that could disrupt the safe functioning and upkeep of the transmission system.
The GRIDCo said the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, had directed persons, businesses, land users and other entities encroaching on transmission line rights-of-way across the country to cease unauthorised activities and vacate the affected corridors within one month.
It stated that the directive particularly applied to persons who had erected structures, established businesses, parked heavy vehicles, undertaken welding or excavation activities, or otherwise occupied or obstructed transmission line corridors.
It warned that after the one-month period, GRIDCo would collaborate with metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies, other statutory institutions and security agencies to enforce the law and remove unauthorised structures and activities from the affected rights-of-way.
The company therefore urged the public, traditional authorities, landowners, businesses and local authorities to cooperate in keeping transmission line corridors clear to protect the safety and reliability of the electricity transmission system.
