The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to hold its regional elections in the Upper West Region to elect new regional executives to steer the affairs of the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The election, scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026, would see 26 people contesting eleven regional executive positions of the party in the region.

Dr Tanko Daniel Dawda, the incumbent Upper West Regional Secretary of the NPP, revealed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Wa on Friday.

He said preparations for the election had been completed, with the venue secured and the Ghana Police Service duly notified to provide security for the exercise, and the Electoral Commission ready to supervise the election.

Dr Tanko, who was seeking re-election, said his decision to seek another term as Regional Secretary of the party was informed by the experience he had accumulated during his first four-year tenure, which he intended to deploy towards rebuilding and strengthening the party in the region.

“My main message is that having been the Regional Secretary for the past four years, I have accumulated some experience, which I think, going forward, with the party being in opposition, I will put that experience to the benefit of the party,” he said.

Dr Dawda said he aimed to contribute to building a stronger and more cohesive party at the regional level capable of mobilising support and positioning the NPP to regain political power in 2028.

He added that, if re-elected, “I am going to work tirelessly with the constituencies, strengthen, especially the youth, women and then the persons living with disabilities and the Nassara wings of the party to enable us to capture power in 2028.”

The NPP Regional Secretary explained that his experience and organisational capacity would be important in the party’s efforts to rebuild the Upper West Region.

The regional election forms part of the NPP’s internal reorganisation and leadership renewal process as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.

The exercise was expected to provide members with the opportunity to elect regional officers who would oversee the administration, mobilisation and organisational activities of the party at the regional level.

Dr Dawda expressed confidence that his experience as Regional Secretary would enable him to contribute meaningfully to that process if given another mandate by the delegates.
