A total of 86 female students are beneficiaries of the 150 tertiary students who benefitted from the 2026 Gold Fields Ghana Foundation (GFGF) scholarship awards from its host communities.
Dr. Celestina Allotey, the Vice President, Community, Gold Fields Ghana Limited (GFGL) announced this at the Akoon Clubhouse in Green Compound when the GFGF presented the scholarships to the beneficiaries.
She said the development was encouraging because it showed that more young women were participating and succeeding in higher education.
She added that this would help the young women pursue their tertiary education with confidence and focus.
According to her, 50 out of the 150 new beneficiaries had their basic education in schools within their host communities, not including the Tarkwa area and stressed that, they were very proud because it showed them how investing in education at the community level could impact young people.
“During vacation periods, to ensure your development goes beyond the lecture hall, the Foundation will be organizing a “Lecture Hall to Workplace” series. These sessions will help equip you with practical skills to prepare you for the world of work”. She noted
Dr. Allotey congratulated the beneficiaries and reminded them that being awarded a scholarship was not the end, but the beginning of a greater responsibility.
“We will keep an eye on you and will be tracking your progress in your various institutions”.
She advised the beneficiaries to work hard, maintain good grades, conduct themselves well to make their families and communities proud, and use what they have learnt to make an impact.
She indicated that “We expect you to remember where you come from. One day, you may also have an opportunity to support someone else, just as you are being supported today”.
Dr. Allotey expressed gratitude to the scholarship awards committee headed by the traditional leaders, for their help and support in ensuring that the selected candidates were truly from their communities and needed help the most.
Professor Bernard Kumi Boateng, Vice Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) Tarkwa, who chaired the function commended GFGL for its consistent support for their students over the years.
He said as a former dean of students and youth coach, he understood the psyche of students and the stress associated with inability to pay school fees.
“Some companies fail to honour their promises after awarding scholarships to our students, but Gold Fields has never done that. In fact, they chase us with the funds” Prof. Kumi added.
Since the establishment of the GFGF scholarship programme in 2005, a total of 3,092 students has benefited from the scholarship scheme.
Over the years, many of the beneficiaries have become doctors, engineers, lawyers, teachers, entrepreneurs, and other professionals.
This include, Prof. Ishmael Quaicoe of UMaT, a proud son of Apinto, Dr. Grace Nyarko, an optometrist from Abekoase ,currently serving at the Presbyterian hospital in Agogo, Mr. Ebenezer Asmah, a Metallurgy Superintendent at Heath Gold Fields, and Dr. Noah Kofi Essel from Tebe and currently with the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital.
