Mrs Fati Kine Lam, the Bono Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has advised the community members to desist from throwing plastic waste into gutters to prevent flooding.
He expressed worry that the region was prone to varying degrees of disaster, saying that flooding was common in the Sunyani, Dormaa Central, Jaman South and Sunyani West Municipalities as well as Tain, Jaman North, Banda Districts of the region.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, Mrs Lam urged the local communities to intensify clean-up exercises and frequently clear gutters to improve drainage systems.
She said that as the rains set-in indiscriminate waste disposal and littering around could lead to flooding and urged the various Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs) in the region to promote proper waste management and sanitation.
Mrs Lam emphasised that NADMO remained a disaster and not relief organisation, and urged community members to take precautionary measures against flooding and other related natural disasters.
She explained that the NADMO had intensified community and household sensitization on proper waste management and sanitation, and appealed for more logistics, saying that the organisation required motorcycles and pickup vehicles.
Mrs Lam said the organisation was collaborating with the MDAs and stakeholders to enhance good drainage systems in the flood-prone communities and called on the Assemblies to strictly enforce their sanitation bye-laws.
