The Newmont Ahafo North Mine of Newmont Ghana Gold Limited (NGGL) has presented $40,000 to the Sunyani Technical University (STU) to support the development of sports infrastructure.
A statement issued by the University said the financial support would also aid the institution’s preparations to host the 2027 Ghana Technical Universities Sports Association (GHATUSA) Games.
“The STU received the cheque during an engagement meeting, when a delegation from the STU visited the Ahafo North Mine on September 24, 2026”, a copy of the statement signed by Madam Safura Mohammed Suraj, the Director of Public Affairs of the STU, explained.
It said the support formed part of efforts to strengthen collaboration between the University and the Mine while promoting sustainable development through sports and community-focused initiatives.
The engagement provided an opportunity for the two institutions to reaffirm their commitment to building a partnership that delivered sustainable impact.
“It further reflects Newmont’s core values of “Be always safe, care deeply, deliver responsibly and improve daily,” it indicated.
Mr Charles Bissue, General Manager of Newmont Ahafo North Mine, stressed the importance of ensuring that the investment delivered value beyond the Games, particularly through proper maintenance of the facilities and adherence to safety standards.
“For us, this support goes beyond the GHATUSA Games. What is equally important is how the facilities are maintained, protected and used safely to ensure that the investment continues to serve students and the wider community for many years,” he stated.
Mr Bissue said: “We value our relationship with STU and look forward to strengthening the collaboration between our two institutions.”
He said the Mine’s partnership with the STU reflected its commitment to creating sustainable value within its host communities.
“We are pleased that this support will contribute not only to the successful hosting of the games but also to infrastructure that can provide lasting benefits to students and the University community,” Mr Bissue indicated.
Mr Stephen Yeboah, Registrar of the STU, reaffirmed the University’s commitment to sustaining the partnership and expressed confidence that the relationship between the Mine and the University would be strengthened for their mutual benefit.
He gave assurance that the institution would maintain the facilities and thanked the Mine for the gesture.
Mr Yeboah pledged the University’s commitment to utilising the funds responsibly towards the successful organisation of the GHATUSA Games and the development of sports.
Professor Julius Caesar Puoza, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the STU, led the delegation, which included Dr Evelyn Nsiah Asare, Sports Director; Professor Kwadwo Boateng Prempeh, Chairman of the GHATUSA Local Organising Committee (LOC); and Mr Samuel Nketia, Acting Director of Works, as well as other members of the LOC.
Officials of Newmont Ahafo North who attended the meeting included Madam Abena Ankomah Acheampomaa, Lead, Communities and Social Performance; Madam Mame Grace Kabutey, Officer, Community Development; Madam Abigail Abankwah Manu, Officer, Community Relations; Mr Ernest Acheampong, Team Lead, Systems and Service; and Madam Antoinette Budu, Land Access, NSP.
