A severe rainstorm accompanied by strong winds has caused a major power outage in Nsuta-Buem and surrounding communities in the Jasikan Municipality of the Oti Region after uprooting trees that fell on electricity lines.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening, leaving residents and businesses without electricity and disrupting economic and social activities in the area.
A visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to the community on Monday revealed several electricity poles and power lines lying dangerously on the ground, particularly around sections of the township and near public facilities.
Mr Mathias Komla Bassayi, Assemblyman for the Nsuta West Electoral Area, said the situation could have resulted in fatalities if it had occurred during school hours.
“If the incident were to happen during school hours, lives may have been lost because some of the electricity lines fell within the school compound,” he stated.
He appealed to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to respond swiftly to repair the damaged infrastructure and restore power supply to the affected communities.
Some residents who spoke to GNA expressed concern over the increasing impact of rainstorms on electricity infrastructure in the area and called for regular maintenance and pruning of trees situated close to power lines.
They also appealed to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Municipal Assembly to support affected households and intensify public education on safety measures during storms.
As of 1025 hours on Monday, May 18, electricity had not been restored, while residents remained hopeful that engineers from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) would arrive soon to rectify the fault.
