Two midwives at the Poase-Cement Health Centre in the Kadjebi District of the Oti Region have assisted a pregnant woman to safely deliver a baby girl on the Butabe road.
Ms. Elizabeth Mensah, Midwife-in-Charge of the Maternity Unit and Ms. Akua Listowel Brasso, an Enrolled Nurse, responded to an emergency call on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, and attended to the woman, identified as Ms. Bella Gadri, 36, who was in labour.
The delivery came after a similar one on August 15, 2026, when a stranded pregnant woman in labour had a delivery at the White House Junction, a suburb of Jasikan, while walking to the Jasikan Municipal hospital.
The deliveries highlight the crucial role of midwives and other health workers in providing emergency maternal care when access to health facilities becomes difficult.
Narrating the incident to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Ms. Mensah said at about 1226 hours, while they were at the health centre, an Okada rider arrived and informed them that he was transporting a pregnant woman from Butabe to the facility when she went into labour on the way.
She said the rider appealed to the health workers to go to the scene and assist the woman.
Ms. Mensah said she and Ms. Brasso immediately gathered the necessary items and rushed to the scene, where they found the woman in active labour.
She said the two health workers assessed the situation and assisted Ms. Gadri to safely deliver the baby girl at the roadside.
According to her, after the delivery, the mother and baby were conveyed to the Poase-Cement Health Centre for further assessment and medical attention.
Ms. Mensah said both mother and baby were in good condition and were subsequently discharged from the facility on Thursday, August 20.
She added that the mother and her newborn were currently staying at their residence in Butabe.
The midwife commended the Okada rider for promptly alerting the health facility, saying his timely intervention enabled the health workers to reach the pregnant woman for safe delivery.
She urged community members to promptly contact health facilities whenever pregnant women experienced complications or signs of imminent labour, particularly while travelling.
The GNA’s attempt to reach Ms. Gadri was unsuccessful, as she was out of contact due to poor network connectivity in the area.
Mr Mutakilu Tsadenu, the Assemblyman for the Butabe/Obuase Electoral Area in the Kadjebi district, commended the midwives for the safe delivery.
Mr Tsadenu said their timely intervention helped to protect the lives of both mother and her newborn.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), he commended the midwives for their prompt response and professionalism, saying their intervention demonstrated the importance of having trained health personnel available to respond to emergencies.
He said the incident also highlighted the urgent need to improve the condition of the Butabe road to ensure easy access to healthcare facilities, particularly for pregnant women and other persons requiring emergency medical attention.
Mr Tsadenu appealed to the Kadjebi District Assembly to consider reshaping and improving the road to make it more accessible to motorists and commercial motorcycle operators.
